Tough Times

These are tough times.

We speak to, and work with, a lot of organisations – and I have been surprised by the number who are currently facing really tough decisions.  I don’t remember a time when things were so challenging for so many organisations in the sector (and I’ve been around a while!).

Many boards are having to think really carefully about what they can continue to offer, and what needs to go.  Those organisations who have been keeping things really tight financially and who have reduced outgoings, and been really clear about their offer – and particularly what they can’t do; are doing OK.  Those with a wide range of funders and/or income sources are also finding things a little easier.  For others, there are really hard decisions to make, to ensure a future – and some won’t survive.

Other organisations are struggling because their people are struggling – the rates of burnout are increasing in the sector, and others are hanging on by their fingernails.  People who have kept going… through the pandemic, through the cost-of-living crisis, through increasing needs of the people they serve…  and they have nothing left.  There is also less people volunteering, particularly in positions with responsibility.

So how do we navigate these times?  Here’s my thoughts:

  • Stand back and really look at the reality of your organisation’s situation and understand what is working and what isn’t (in delivery and financially)
  • Grieve the situation – feel the feelings and support the others in your organisation to do the same
  • Ask for help – be honest about your position.  Talk to funders and grant makers and people who support you.  Tell them what you need.
  • Make the difficult decisions – cut your costs; change your delivery; focus on your vision and key aims
  • Celebrate what you have done; and if you are able to continue, then build in gratitude and celebration to your organisation
  • Be generous: if you and your organisation are doing OK, then how can you support the organisations and people around you?
